Growth inherently requires us to tolerate discomfort. To see a more conscious choice, we must become aware of the unconsciousness of our previous habit or tendency. This involves at least a moment of unflattering self-awareness which usually feels uncomfortable.

But it doesn’t quite work that way anymore. As much as I’d like to run off to the nearest mountain retreat and live there forever sitting in meditation, eating vegetarian, stretching in yoga poses all day, life keeps on reminding me I have a kid needing to be fed and watered. Oh, and the husband needs feeding and watering too.
So how do you protect your energy field when you need to keep going with your daily routine? Specially when you’re thrown into high-pressure situations and you’re kinda obligated to be there. Us sensitive folks, we still have to live and move through the world. This is what we signed up for. Side effect of opting to come into this life during these trying times.
An example, I still work four days a week in an office, where there are deadlines and stressed out peeps on all sides. It’s hectic. Also I’m in a hot-desking environment. I’m not guaranteed the same cubicle everyday. A few years ago they instigated flexible work arrangements at my office so that people can come into the office when it suits them best, but that means there’s actually less desk space than people on my floor. And the desk space is a free-for-all zone. You can sit wherever you want, which is good for most part. The side effect of this is, if you’re a sensitive like me and if the guy who was occupying my desk yesterday was having a terribly bad day, I’m feeling his vibes today. Ditto if the person in the next cubicle is having a screaming match on the phone with someone from the sales team.
This is true for any pressure cooker environments – offices, trains and buses at peak hour or even situations where people are arguing loudly. In the lift.
What’s worked for me the best, especially at work is to put on the headphones and listen to some boppy music, the happier the better. Hearing happy music somehow rewires our energy field to tap into an inner well of balance refocusing our attention to whatever task we’re doing, but at the same time we’re not taking in the immediate vibe of our environment. It's an energetic coccoon that is created by amplifying our own happy vibes through the music.
Below are the other tools I frequently practice to keep my energy from being depleted by a low vibe environment.
- Listen to funky music on the headphones.
- Drink lots of water during the day, to release the energetic toxins.
- Pausing every now and then to slowly breathe deeply, rhythmically all day way down into the belly.
- Take a break and go out for walk when you feel you need to.
Essentially, what I do is I keep my own inner core burning to ensure a healthy, balanced energy field for me. Do this and you’re practically invincible. We gotta keep living within the world, because that’s where the excitement is happening and sometimes we can’t avoid these high pressure situations. Usually we want to be in the thick of it. Woohoo!
